Energy Transitions: Why Lilliputians may win
The lecture draws on the author's works on how energy systems transition from "renewables" to fossil fuels, and back to renewables and nuclear, within a century. How such transitions are triggered, and how they gain traction, is proving a recursive and tentative. In the process, the fate of energy firms vary, where dominance shifted with the adoption of emergent technologies and fuels. Some of these dynamics are addressed in the book - Energy Investments: An adaptive approach to profiting from uncertainties - where accepted financial wisdoms on risks and uncertainties are questioned. The lessons, and alternative approaches proposed by the author, provide radically different ways of responding strategically to the opportunities offered by the vagaries of imperfect and dynamic energy markets.
